The Expansion of Three New Provinces in Papua Proposed by the Community
The Plenary Session of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) on Tuesday (12/4) approved three bills (RUUs) for the new autonomous regions in Papua to be drafted by the DPR. The three Papua New Guinea bills are the Bill on the Establishment of the South Papua Province, the Bill on the Establishment of the Central Papua Province, and the Bill on the Establishment of the Central Highlands Papua Province.
“The expansion that was issued was not only the will of the center but was input and aspirations that emerged from the community. Even though there are pros and cons here and there, it's a natural thing," said Komarudin Watubun, a member of Commission II DPR for the Papuan Electoral District (Dapil), in Timika, Mimika Regency, Papua, Friday (13/5).
Komarudin, a member of the DPR from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, asked that the decision regarding the three new autonomous regions in Papua be understood and understood by all levels of society regarding the benefits and objectives of the expansion. Thus, it needs to be properly socialized and it is the task of the central, provincial and district governments.
"Therefore, to make it easier to provide socialization and understanding of the purpose of the expansion of new autonomous regions, it must be carried out properly to the community so that it is easily understood and accepted by the community. I will make a socialization book that is easy for the public to understand, because if you read the law too long, it will be difficult to understand,” said Komarudin further.
Komarudin Watubun was in Timika during a series of recesses in Mimika and had a face-to-face meeting with community, religious, youth leaders, PDI-P Mimika DPC administrators and party cadres and sympathizers, and various other elements which took place in the Grand Tembaga Hall Hotel Timika.
The recess activity carried the theme of Consolidating the Three Pillars of Parties Towards the Expansion of Central Papua Province and Consolidating the Winning Strategy for the 2024 Election coupled with outreach activities about the new autonomous regions plan for three provinces, namely Central Papua, South Papua, and Central Highlands Papua, guided by the Secretary of the PDI-P Papua DPD, Calvin. Mansnembra.
The recess activity was also filled with socialization about the Draft Law for the New Autonomous Region as well as hearing suggestions and questions from participants regarding the new autonomous region plan. The recess is also used to disseminate information on policies or changes in the Special Autonomy Law and plans for the expansion of new autonomous regions.
“In the future, the party must be more serious about the implementation and regulation arrangements. Both regarding changes in the Special Autonomy Law and the expansion of new autonomous regions for three new provinces. We need socialization, especially about the changes in the Special Autonomy Law and the expansion. The current position The special law on expansion is accumulative. The expansion plan in Papua is open, not closed and can be processed at any time. The process is an initiative from the DPR," said Komarudin.
Mimika DPRD member Yulian Salossa admitted that his party supports the expansion of the new autonomous region in three new provinces in Papua, including Central Papua Province with Timika as the provincial capital.
“We support the expansion of the new autonomous regions, but the benefits of this expansion must be enjoyed and felt by indigenous Papuans. Like it or not, the expansion has become the agenda and policy of the central government, so we must support it," said Salossa, who is also a member of the DPRD from the PDI-P faction.
The recess of Komarudin Watubun in Timika, a golden city on the slopes of Mount Nemangkawi, was also attended by the Regent of Nabire Regency Mesak Magai, the Chairperson of the Mimika PDI-P DPC who is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Mimika DPRD, Yohanis Felix Helyanan, SE, the Deputy Head of Party Honor and Deputy Regent of Mimika Johannes Rettob, S.Sos, MM, PDIP DPC Secretary Mimika Alfian Akbar Balyanan, SE, and other PDIP DPC administrators as well as cadres and sympathizers.
