It is hoped that the new DOB PPS Law will be ratified in the near future

After the plenary session of the Indonesian House of Representatives regarding the Bill on the Expansion of the New Autonomous Region (DOB) for the Province of South Papua (PPS), there is now a Presidential Letter and it is continued with the discussion at Commission II of the DPR RI.

Member of Commission IV of the DPR RI, the NasDem Faction of the Papuan Dapil, H. Sulaeman L. Hamzah hoped that the process would not take long to be promulgated into the new DOB Law. He hopes that by the end of June 2022 the law will be ratified and no later than July before the trial period ends.

"So that mid-July we will enter the next recess, we have completed the discussion," explained H. Sulaeman in Merauke, Monday (30/5/2022).

Communities in four regencies in South Papua have had to prepare government apparatus and have regional symbols or symbols as well as technical matters for new autonomous regions before the issuance of the new autonomous regions law.

The purpose of the expansion is for the welfare of the community. Because the Otsus journey was approximately 20 years in Papua until the amendment of the law was issued, development in Papua has not been evenly distributed, the community is considered not to be prosperous and Papua and West Papua have the status of poor according to statistics.

"It is hoped that this expansion will bring services closer to the community. So we hope that there is a good understanding from the Papuan people because from all sides, this expansion is for the welfare of the people," he added.

The pros and cons of the concern that indigenous people will be marginalized can actually be regulated in a derivative regulation of Law number 2 of 2021. This will help limit the flow of people outside Papua entering Papua. Even those who come must have the skills to advance Papua. Because, so far the people of the archipelago have not positioned the birthright of the Papuan people as a part that must be truly respected.

"So we have come to fill development in Papua while still respecting the birthright and OAP has a more prominent position," he said.

Sulaeman Hamzah hopes that there needs to be a special rule, namely a derivative rule that will soon be made by the DPRP and the government. “We have open space there for Perdasi and Perdasus so that the parts that are worried can be fortified from now on with regulations. Maybe it's easier for all parts of the school children, then the placement of employees and important positions in politics must also have protection for indigenous Papuans," he said.
