UNICEF Appreciates the Role of Regent Usman Wanimbo

Consultant of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the Papua and West Papua Areas, Achmad Yuri, expressed his appreciation to the Regent of Tolikara, Usman G. Wanimbo, SE., M.Sc., for his role in carrying out the flagship program of nutrition intake for the First 1000 Days of Life (HPK). for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children.

This appreciation was conveyed by Achmad Yuri on the sidelines of his visit to Tolikara Regency to see the progress of immunization for children in the National Child Immunization Month.

From the results of his monitoring for three days, from 13-15 June 2022, several Puskesmas and Posyandu in Tolikara Regency carried out routine child immunization activities.

“I visited several Posyandu and saw that the First 1000 Days of Life activities were going very well, because there was an immunization program in them. I am very impressed with the provision of nutrition to pregnant women and nursing mothers. Stunting will not work if we only provide nutrition, it must also be with immunizations to prevent children from disease," said Achmad Yuri in a release received by Cenderawasih Pos, Sunday (19/6).
 
He said, as an international organization under the auspices of the United Nations, UNICEF is tasked with providing services and protecting children's rights. Therefore, his party strongly supports every effort to provide health and education services in various regions in Indonesia.

“We, UNICEF, are very concerned about how to protect children so that they can get a good education. If Papuan children are healthy, have smart brains, and are supported by a good education, of course Papua in the future will be more advanced," explained Achmad Yuri.

On the same occasion, Achmad Yuri said, National Child Immunization Month is an immunization month intended for children aged 9 months to 12 years. Namely, the activities of providing additional measles-rubella immunization and immunization for children under 5 years who have not received complete immunizations.

In Tolikara, although immunization for children in the 1000 HPK Program went very well, immunization coverage for school children was not complete. Achmad Yuri hopes to hold an audience with the local government to highlight the importance of immunization for children. The reason is, during the Covid-19 pandemic, cases of Measles and Rubella occurred in Papua Province because immunization coverage for children was low.

Meanwhile, Assistant II of the Tolikara Regency Secretariat, Yusak Totok Krido Saksono explained, in the two periods of the leadership of the Regent Usman G. Wanimbo, the Tolikara Regency Government carried out the 1000 HPK nutrition service excellence program.

"The provision of nutritional intake and health services is given to mothers and children in the golden age (for 1000 days), which is for 9 months or 270 days the child is in the womb until the age of 2 years 730 days," he said.
 
According to Yusak Totok, the 1000 HPK nutrition program in Tolikara Regency has several main objectives. Among other things, improving maternal and child health, reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality, creating the next generation of Tolikara that is superior, productive and of high quality, and provides motivation to the public about being aware of nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle.

He also said that the implementation of the 1000 HPK program in Tolikara received appreciation from various groups. The provision of nutritional intake and health services for mothers and children every day is considered the right step in preventing stunting and creating a generation of Papuans who are healthy, intelligent and superior.

"One of the appreciations is that in 2021, Regent Usman G. Wanimbo received an award from the BKKBN for his commitment to fostering and expanding innovation to prevent stunting in the regions through the 1000 HPK Program," he concluded.
