The Story of Jeane, ITB's Youngest Graduate Graduated S1 at the Age of 20
Graduated with a bachelor's degree at the age of 20, Jeane Irene Beatrice Gloriana Zebua Wanggai won the title as the youngest graduate at the third graduation of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) for the 2021/2022 academic year.
The Papuan woman was surprised to find her name mentioned in Sabuga as the youngest graduate.
"I didn't expect it because I thought there were still younger ones," he said, quoted from the Bandung Institute of Technology website.
Jeane is a 2018 student who completed her undergraduate studies in the Environmental Engineering study program.
Choose a field of interest
Discussing her educational history, Jeane was deliberately put into elementary school at a young age by her mother, which was 5 years old.
At that time, he was already fluent in reading and writing so that he was deemed worthy of formal education.
“I learned (to read and write) independently, through the posters my mother bought at the store. Elementary school entry requirements are also not as strict as now so I can be accepted even though I'm still relatively young," he said.
It didn't stop there, when she was a student at SMAN 3 Jayapura, Jeane also chose to take part in the acceleration program and made her graduate in just two years.
Despite being younger than her friends, Jeane admitted that she did not have any significant difficulties in academics. He actually felt the difficulty when he had to balance the way of thinking of his friends who were more mature.
Departing from her interest in engineering, Jeane finally decided to choose ITB as her dream campus.
Through the SNMPTN pathway, he managed to be accepted into the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FTSL), and then chose Environmental Engineering.
When asked about her impression while studying at the study program, Jeane expressed her admiration for the new sciences that she could learn.
He is also grateful to the lecturers and teaching staff who are very extraordinary and inspiring.
“In my opinion, the most enjoyable thing (in Environmental Engineering) is being able to work in a laboratory. When you were in high school, you only knew the simple things, such as the Chemistry Lab, but here they are cool. For example, in the Environmental Microbiology course, I had the opportunity to see bacteria and learn the optimal temperature for survival,” he explained.
Active in organization
In addition to academic activities, Jeane also actively participates in the ITB Environmental Engineering Student Association (HMTL ITB) and ITB Cultural Unit ITB (UKIR ITB).
Through these two platforms, he was able to meet various people with different backgrounds.
One of the most memorable moments was when he had the opportunity to become chairman of the July 2020 ITB HMTL graduation.
“That experience really shaped me into a more mature person. The friends who help me are also very supportive and can open my mind to many things,” said Jeane with a light laugh.
Now, Jeane is taking a fast track program in the same study program and hopes to graduate with a master's degree next year.
In the future, he hopes to realize his dream of returning to Papua and serving there.
"Keep expanding relationships and don't stress, small progress is still progress!" message to all students.
