After the Sorong Flood, normalization was carried out at 23 points

The Department of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) of West Papua Province carried out dredging with heavy equipment at a number of drainage points after flooding occurred in Sorong City, West Papua.

The Acting Head of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) of West Papua Province, Yohanes Momot, said that the drainage conditions on Jalan Klasaman were the worst during the flood.

After being identified, the drainage channel built by the local shopkeeper was found to be closed.

Water can not flow so it overflows into the streets.

"So we, the government, must be strong, we are servants, but we have to think about the interests of the people, don't let one or two people who act as victims of all the people become victims. Whatever happens, we will continue to dismantle it for the benefit of the people," said Yohanes in Sorong, Sunday (11/9). /2022).

Furthermore, he said, the drainage will be dismantled one hundred percent. After that, it will be replaced with wooden bridge work for temporary access to their business.

"Then the bridge construction will be included in the main APBD for road construction work. Why did we take over ourselves because the position of the bridge was very low when the water came to clog it so that this location will be leveled high, so that 5 to 10 years it doesn't happen again," he said.

Yohanes said that the backfill and river normalization was carried out at 23 points involving as many as 20 heavy equipment.

"We can see that today we have full control, such as in the Kalagison area, Klawalu, Bugis Village. The people of Sorong must have seen that several areas have been free of flood subscriptions today," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Acceleration of Flood Disaster Management in Sorong City, Dance Sangkek, explained that the fourteen-day emergency response period ended on September 6 and according to the evaluation meeting, Sorong City is currently entering a recovery period.

The emergency period can be extended by 7 to 14 days.

"After we carried out an evaluation of the flood disaster, we found that something big had happened upstream above (Galian C) yesterday, we had a coordination meeting with the Forestry Agency, the Forestry Law Office all recommended that Galian C should be closed," said Dance to reporters.
