Three New Provinces in Papua are Supported to Participate in the 2024 Election

The three new provinces resulting from the division of Papua are supported to participate in the 2024 General Election (Pemilu). This support was conveyed by the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian in the Commission II Working Meeting of the Indonesian House of Representatives. "The Ministry of Home Affairs supports the holding of elections in the 3 new regions resulting from the division of Papua as a result of the expansion of new provinces in the 3 provinces, which refers to Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections and the Law on the formation of new provinces," said the Minister of Home Affairs, Wednesday, August 31, 2022.

The election in the three new provinces, he said, was still guided by the General Election Commission (PKPU) Regulation No. 3 of 2022 concerning the Stages and Schedule for the Implementation of the 2024 Election which had been set by the KPU on June 9, 2022.

The Minister of Home Affairs also explained about the legal implications related to the implementation of the General Election in the new province in Papua, so that it is necessary to make changes to several substances in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections. This includes arrangements for the formation of election organizers in new provinces, requirements for political parties participating in the elections, as well as the number of seats and electoral districts (Dapil) for DPR RI, DPD, and Provincial DPRD.

Meanwhile, the substance of other changes is regarding the determination of nominees for candidates for members of the provincial DPRD and the attachment of Law Number 7 of 2017. The attachments include the number of members of the provincial KPU, the number of members of the provincial Bawaslu, the number of seats and the DPR RI Dapil, and the number of seats in the provincial DPRD Dapil.

According to the Minister of Home Affairs, the formation of the DPR RI and DPRD electoral districts is the main requirement for a new province in Papua to participate in the 2024 General Election. Law Number 7 of 2017.”
