Biak Hospital can already serve cataract surgery once a month
Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Biak, Papua has been able to provide cataract surgery for local residents once a month.
"Every month there are around 30-40 Biak residents who receive cataract surgery at the RSUD," said Director of Biak Hospital, Dr Ricardo Mayor in Biak, Friday.
Ricardo admitted, cataract surgery is a minor operation and can be operated by an ophthalmologist.
He said, so far, if a patient wants cataract surgery, it must be done outside the area in Makassar or a hospital in Jakarta or other Java islands.
"For now, if patients who want to do cataract surgery can be served at Biak Hospital every month," said the doctor, the native son of Biak.
Director of RSUD Ricardo said that the visits of patients who underwent cataract surgery to Biak Hospital came from various villages to neighboring Supiori and Yapen Islands districts.
"Yes, Biak Hospital is ready to provide cataract surgery for residents of Biak surrounding it," he said.
Cataract surgery, according to Ricardo, is a degenerative process in the form of cloudiness in the lens of the eyeball, causing decreased vision and blindness.
"This cloudiness is caused by a biochemical reaction that causes lens protein coagulation," he said.
Until 2022, the number of health and non-medical personnel on duty at Biak Hospital is 700 people, 18 of whom are specialist doctors.
