Having been stopped due to disturbances from the Papua KKB, Kiwirok Gunung Bintang Airport services were opened

Flight services at Kiwirok Airport, Gunung Bintang Regency, Papua Mountains have resumed since December 2, 2022.

This airport was closed in 2021 due to security aspects, or interference from the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in the area.

In September 2021, the Kiwirok District experienced interference from the KKB.
 
The attacks on various public facilities in the area forced local residents to flee to other districts, one of which was Oksibil.
 
Acting Director General of Air Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Nur Isnin Istiartono said, now the people of the Kiwirok District can enjoy air transportation services again.
 
This is in line with the reopening of flights with the Sentani-Kiwirok-Sentani route at Kiwirok Airport.

"A pilot subsidy flight has been carried out with the Sentani-Kiwirok route back and forth with a weekly schedule using a Susi Air Caravan type," he said in a written statement, Saturday (3/12/2022).

According to Nur, the return to operation of the pilot flights from Sentani to Kiwirok could not have been separated from the joint efforts of the central government, the regional government of the Gunung Bintang, TNI/Polri officers, to the Kiwirok Airport Management Unit Office.

He ensured that the Directorate General of Transportation in the Ministry of Transportation would continue to support the continuity of flights at all airports by opening connectivity in disadvantaged, frontier, outermost and border areas (3TP).
 
So apart from reopening the Sentani-Kiwirok flight route, this month there will still be a gradual opening of other routes to serve the mobility of the people of the Kiwirok District ahead of Christmas.

"Furthermore, there are still five routes in December (to be opened) to serve the mobility of the people of the Kiwirok District in welcoming Christmas and the 2023 New Year," concluded Nur.
