Plato Merani, the mastermind behind the attack on the Papuan KKB in Yapen, killing civilians

The Armed Criminal Group (KKB) carried out acts of terror indiscriminately in Yapen Islands Regency, Papua, Tuesday (13/12/2022). As a result, a civilian named Yeferson Sayuri was shot dead by the KKB.

The separatist group in Papua also attacked a police group and set two patrol cars on fire. The shootout between the KKB and the police broke out for about an hour.

This incident occurred when the police group was about to open a roadblock at Kilometer 1, Jalan Trans Yapen Saubeba-Angkaisera, Yapen. After being investigated, the perpetrator of the attack was finally revealed.

The KKB leader, Plato Merani, was said to be the perpetrator and led the attack. Director of the General Criminal Investigation of the Papua Regional Police Kombes Faizal Ramadhani said the main actor Plato Merani was found after his video footage went viral on social media.

Plato Merani himself reported the action right in front of the patrol car which was set on fire, at the same time the gun battle was taking place. “The culprit is Plato Merani, he is the one who is talking on the video and holding a rifle,” he said via text message, Wednesday (14/12/2022).

Plato Merani, said Faizal, was known to be one of the KKB officials under the command of Fernando Warobay. According to him, Fernando Warobay has long been known as the leader of the KKB in the Yapen area.

In recent years, the group has never taken action. "He (Plato Merani) is still in Fernando Warobay's group," said Faizal.

Previously, the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) attacked a group of police vehicles that were going to open a roadblock at KM 1 Jalan Trans Yapen Saubeba-Angkaisera, Yapen Islands Regency, Papua, Tuesday (13/12/2022) afternoon. At that time, at around 12:20 WIT, the police group arrived at the location which was blocked by two logs placed in the middle of the road. "When they were about to open the barrier, the KKB fired shots from the hill towards the members who were at the TKP."

“Finally there was gunfire, while the members looked for a safe position and paid attention to the shooter who was at a height,” said Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police Kombes Ahmad Musthofa Kamal in a written statement, Wednesday (14/12/2022). Kamal said that as a result of this incident, the KKB burned two police vehicles. In addition, there were casualties from civilians who participated in the police entourage.

"From the Police delegation brought three sensor operators, one of whom died on behalf of Yeferson Sayuri due to a gunshot wound to the back. The victim was immediately evacuated to the Serui Hospital," he said. The victim's body has now been brought by the family to be buried.
