Tens of Stalls in the Deiyai Market Complex were Burnt by Unknown Persons

The burning of dozens of stalls owned by traders was carried out by a number of unknown people at the Kampung Waghete market, Tigi District, Deiyai Regency, Central Papua, Monday (12/12/2022).

Information compiled by the media said that the arson of the stalls is estimated to have occurred at around 11:00 WIT on Jalan Waghete I, right in front of the Thomas Adii Waghete field. It is estimated that at least 10 stalls were burned to the ground.

This arson incident occurred because of the circulation of misguided rumors related to a series of incidents in the area, such as, for example, the existence of food poisoning residents which was added to the latest issue about a woman who fainted when she was about to buy clothes. When she was trying to wear the clothes she was about to buy, the woman suddenly fainted.

These issues provoked the anger of the local indigenous people, which led to the burning of the market stalls.

The Director of the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Papua Regional Police, Kombes Pol Faizal Ramadhani, who was confirmed, confirmed the incident of burning a kiosk at the Deiyai market. But he has not received a detailed report regarding the incident.

"It's true that there was an incident, but I haven't received a detailed report yet," said Faizal, who was confirmed by telephone from Timika.
