The education sector is a priority for the Papua Provincial Government

The Papua Provincial Government (Pemprov) through the local Regional Education, Library and Archives Office stated that the education sector is one of the priority programs that are expected to produce an intelligent and quality generation in leading Papua in the future.

Head of the Regional Education, Library and Archives Service (DPPAD) Protasius Lobya in Jayapura, Tuesday, said that since being appointed governor and deputy governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe-Klemen Tinal (LUKMEN) in 2013 has made education a priority for local children to pursue behind.

"We manage education that is of a principle nature, such as the affirmation program, both secondary and higher education which is in accordance with the national agenda so that it gets full support through the Special Autonomy (Otsus) budget," he said.

According to Protasius, in this program Indigenous Papuans (OAP) can get the opportunity to study at all universities throughout Indonesia.

"Education is a priority for us to intervene in the fight against illiteracy in collaboration with religious-based universities in the Land of Papua," he said.

He explained the implementation of the mandate of Law (UU) Number 23 of 2014 concerning Regional Government which ordered the transfer of duties and responsibilities for the management of SMA-SMK from the regency/city regional government to the Provincial Government.

"However, now based on Government Regulation 106 of 2021 as the implementation of Law Number 2 of 2021 concerning Special Autonomy so that the authority to manage SMA and SMK from the provinces returns to the districts/cities," he said again.

He added that even so, his party hopes to continue to maintain quality in providing teaching to the younger generation.
