Vice President Ma'ruf Amin Asks for Firm Action on the Papua KKB

Vice President (Wapres) Ma'ruf Amin asked for strict law enforcement to be applied to the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Papua.

This statement was made by Ma'ruf during a closed meeting with the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD and Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian at the Vice President's Official Residence, Jakarta, Tuesday (20/12/2022).

"In this case, the Vice President requests that there be firm steps to enforce the law, so that the state is present there. In order to take security measures against those who are causing trouble, separatism, and that is endangering the country," said Vice Presidential spokesperson Masduki Baidlowi in his statement, quoted Wednesday (21/12/2022).

Ma'ruf, said Masduki, called the KKB an evil group and made the Papuan people restless and insecure.

"They are a group that is not true, an evil group, why? Because they want people to be restless, they carry out terror shootings, killings and causing casualties, deliberately creating insecurity," he said.

According to Masduki, Ma'ruf asked for certainty that the state is present in Papua by guaranteeing the safety of the Papuan people. So that the Papuan people are not overshadowed by fear of the actions of the Papuan KKB group.

"So that the state is present there, efforts are made to take security measures against those who are causing trouble, separatism, and that is endangering the country," he said.

However, Ma'ruf ensured that the Government would also continue to apply a humanist or humanitarian approach in building prosperity in Papua.

"So there are concrete steps for the welfare of Papua, and the existence of ministries and institutions so that they can immediately develop welfare in Papua, that was a request from the Vice President," said Masduki.

Expectations of the New TNI Commander

Previously, Ma'ruf Amin hoped that the new TNI Commander, Admiral Yudo Margono, would maintain a humanist approach in dealing with Papua.

"We are indeed continuing to take a humanist approach, building through a territorial approach with law enforcement," said Ma'ruf at the Vice Presidential Palace, Tuesday (20/12/2022).

However, Ma'ruf said that a firm approach would also be applied in Papua. Bearing in mind that the acts of violence by the Papuan Armed Criminal Group (KKB) still often act.

"However, because there are still many acts of violence perpetrated by the KKB, there may be more firm steps in dealing with this, many parties have voiced it to protect and protect the people of Papua," he said.

Ma'ruf said that a firm approach was not carried out in all regions, but only in certain areas. "Even if there is, it's actually still in the area of a small group, but it really has to be dealt with even more firmly," he said.

According to Ma'ruf, the majority of Papua are actually very safe and many are asking for another new province to be formed.

"Even though it's actually only in certain areas, so if you say that Papua is actually not in all of Papua, yes, only in certain areas, the rest of Papua is conducive and safe. I rotated for 5 days from Jayapura, Merauke, Timika, Kaimana, all the way to Biak and they even asked to add another new province," he concluded.
